84: South Sudan🇸🇸 : It’s Getting Very Hot: Part One: Time to Die or Go to Prison by Stella Gaitano (tr. Anthony Calderbank) from “ArabLit Quarterly Fall 2018: Beginnings” (Ed.M.Lynx Qualey)

In a Nutshell:

This beautiful short story is surprising yet empathetic, the ending took my breath away. It tells of a man’s last days, living in poverty, in what we imagine to be South Sudan but it could be many countries.

Observations:

Gaitano is one of few South Sudanese writers to write in Arabic. Gaitano’s new novel, The Souls of Eddo will be published by Dedalus in June 2021. You can read an excerpt here (tr.Sawad Hussain).

Quotes:

“The streets wind like snakes and always lead to a dead end.”

“The rain, gathered on their ear lobes, glistening like crystals in the darkness and you sense hope, a distant hope, very distant.”
